So What’s This Even About?
I’m sure you’re wondering why I’ve gathered you all…
Last month I attended a large conference called Denver Startup Week, and sat in on a session by Liz Giorgi about how to make your brand stand out in a cluttered content market. As the new owner of a 6-month-old marketing company, I was at this conference to be inspired by others in the industry and learn how to be better at what I do for my clients. Except this particular session ended up being more than that.
This Wednesday morning turned out to be a whole lot more valuable personally when our speaker said, “Your [brand’s] story isn’t a straight, linear progression. Your story is all over the damn place – up, down, and with a lot of left turns.” I was pretty struck. This, plus the idea that authenticity usually wins in creating a brand that resonates with people, really got me thinking. I took it to mean that I (we), needed to stop bullshitting so much and making it seem like everything in our lives is moving along swimmingly 100% of the time, to convince others that we’re successful every minute of every day, because no one’s story is like that.
I thought about this a lot, almost every day until now, actually, and realized it’s time to change how I’ve been going about creating content on social media for my personal life and business. Though I’m a very positive person, life isn’t all sunshine and rainbows for most of us, and I have a feeling that while my friends and other readers love to see other people do well (shame on you if you don’t), we also appreciate someone who can openly share the shit in their life because it makes us realize we’re not the only ones going through life in all sorts of ups, downs, and left turns, and that’s cool, too.
I had thought about starting a blog for a while for various reasons. Partly because I believe in the mental relief that comes with writing down thoughts and feelings, partly because I’m way too social of a person to work alone in my apartment everyday and I kinda just want to chat with people, even if only through this platform, partly because it might improve writing and communication skills – who knows? -, and partly because I thought, “Hell, why not? Let’s see what happens.”
THE ONE RULE: As you’re reading, if you feel some type of way about anything in here, I want you to comment.
If you’re going through something similar and can relate to that week’s shittyness, let me know.
If you want to give me a pat on the back because you think I did something awesome, let me know!
If you think I’m stupid for trying to do all this at once, that’s cool too… let me know.
My goal is to use this blog as a place where I can share the good AND the bad about what it’s like for me trying to take a business off the ground, stay committed to my athletics, and balance both of these with money/friends/family/dating, etc. Hopefully by including my personal ups and downs, you can relate to some of the frustrations that no one ever seems to share on social media, or maybe you’ll think, “He seems to be doing well even though sometimes things aren’t great.” This may be ugly, it may be beautiful, but it’s my story and it will be real, and I hope it can provide some value to your life.
Love this!
It’s time to share your path to your latest clients. I know that was not an easy road!
